Anchored by a network of more than 1,000 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.

Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.

Tanguy Bernard is a professor at the University of Bordeaux. His research interests include development economics, agricultural economics, and African studies. Tanguy’s work is mainly focused on Africa, where he conducts research on topics such as smallholder commercialization (through contracts, cooperatives, and rural assembly markets), poverty and the formation of aspirations, and intra-household decision-making.
Tanguy serves as a mentor to J-PAL regional scholars and has lectured at J-PAL training events.
He received his PhD in development microeconomics and applied econometrics from the Centre for Study and Research on International Development.
