Addressing poverty in the United States (U.S.) through an implementation study of MATHstream

MATHstream is an adaptive, interactive video streaming program with embedded assessments in which a diverse cast of super-teachers deliver targeted math instruction in a fun, engaging, game-based environment. It’s designed to fill unfinished learning gaps that most impact low-income students, engage the most disengaged students, and provide the customized learning environment and uninterrupted instruction that students need to get back on track. In this study, we will analyze the implementation of MATHstream in a wide and diverse set of schools and districts currently using the program. We’ll also examine the relationship between MATHstream usage and student end-of-year math test scores. During the course of the study, we’ll build relationships with schools and districts to inform recruitment efforts and the design of a future, full-scale randomized evaluation, as the number of students needed in an randomized evaluation is highly dependent on study design and partner buy-in. The results of this implementation study will help us take meaningful steps toward a full-scale randomized evaluation of MATHstream.
