Understanding School-Based Violence Networks in Ghana

School-based violence is a pervasive issue worldwide and harms children’s physical and emotional well-being. While data exist describing students’ reported experiences of violence, little is known about the more complex dynamics within schools of perceived collective norms and whose behavior contributes the most to perceptions of a social consensus concerning harassment behaviors in the school. Drawing on theories of collective norms, networks, and behavioral segmentation, this pilot study will conduct the first-in-depth network survey in sub-Saharan Africa on the attitudes and experiences of students and teachers with school-violence. The findings from the study will subsequently be used to inform UNICEF Ghana, the Ghana Ministry of Education, and the Ghana Education Service on interventions that will encourage conflict prevention norms and behaviors in lower and upper secondary schools in Ghana.
