Bureaucracy, adoption of digital technology, and firm growth

Our project aims to strengthen local state capabilities in servicing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and to evaluate impacts on local MSME outcomes, including the adoption of Digital Financial Services (DFS) and e-commerce. We will conduct surveys to identify what services firms demand from local governments, and what frictions prevent the local governments from supplying them. Based on the results, we will design an intervention at the local government level and test its effectiveness.
