The world is gathering in New York next week to discuss how we can transform education by 2030. Achieving gender equity in education will be a key objective in the next ten years. In this virtual panel event, we will gather experts and practitioners who use evidence to design girl-focused programmes to share their lessons on what we know, what we still need to learn, and how we can move forward on gender equity. This panel is hosted by J-PAL Africa and the Population Council, with the participation of the African Population and Health Research Center, the Center for Global Development, Educate!, the Forum for African Women Educationalists, and UNICEF.

The panel will coalesce actors, who use evidence to improve girls' education in Africa and beyond, to share their learnings with policymakers and partners on how we can move towards gender equity in education by 2030. The event will kickstart with a brief evidence overview by the Population Council and then dive deep into the results of a twelve-year study on the effects of scholarships for girls in Ghana by Pascaline Dupas and coauthors.

The panel discussion will then foster a conversation around three key questions:

  1. Should policymakers deliver gender-specific programmes, and what are the possible benefits of these interventions?
  2. Which types of programmes will move the needle on equity in education by 2030 based on existing evidence, and what do we still need to learn?
  3. How will we know if we have made a positive impact on girls' lives, and how can rigorous measurement support accountability?

This panel is hosted as part of the Transforming Education Summit (TES) convened by the United Nations Secretary-General in September. The Summit aims to mobilize action, ambition, solidarity, and solutions to transforming education by 2030. Equity and gender equality will be a key priority under the Summit’s Thematic Action Track 1: Inclusive, equitable, safe, and healthy schools.
