The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 900 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.

Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.
Our research, policy, and training work is fundamentally better when it is informed by a broad range of perspectives.

Cally Ardington is a Professor in the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town. She has extensive experience in the design, management, and micro-econometric analysis of social surveys. Her research focuses on education, health, labor markets, and household behavior. She is currently working on a randomized evaluation of a holiday program designed to support Grade 4 learners in the transition to English as the language of teaching and learning in South Africa. Cally completed her PhD in Economics at the University of Cape Town.
In addition to serving as Co-Scientific Director of J-PAL Africa, Cally has served as a lecturer at J-PAL training events.
