Anchored by a network of more than 1,000 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.
Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.

Executive Director, J-PAL Africa
Vinayak Bhardwaj is the Executive Director of J-PAL Africa at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa. He oversees the strategic and technical components of JPAL Africa's work, and helps cultivate relationships and partnerships with policymakers across the Africa region to help inform evidence-based policy.
Prior to joining UCT and J-PAL, Vinayak worked as a senior health economist at University of Witwatersrand. Before that he worked at Medecins Sans Frontieres in various capacities, including policy advocacy to the South African government.
He holds a master's degree in chemical engineering from UCT, master's and doctoral degrees in public health (with a focus on statistics and health economics) from Johns Hopkins University.
