Anchored by a network of more than 1,000 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.
Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.

Research Associate, J-PAL Africa
Jack Calland is a Senior Research Associate at J-PAL Africa, where he studies interventions aimed at reducing unemployment. He has a BCom in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University Cape Town, with a First-Class Honours in Economics, and an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics & Political Science, awarded in the First Class and with the Prize for Best Performance.
Before joining J-PAL, Jack worked as a consultant in the digital public policy and finance sectors in London and Johannesburg.
