The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 900 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.

Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.

Matthew Notowidigdo is a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Scientific Director of J-PAL North America. His research broadly focuses on labor and health economics. He studies the causes and economic consequences of unemployment duration and insurance, as well as the impacts of health and health insurance on labor markets. Notowidigdo holds a Master's in engineering and a PhD in economics from MIT. In 2008, he was a selected participant in the Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings. He received the Carleton B. Tucker Award for Outstanding Teaching from MIT, as well as Excellence in Refereeing Awards from the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, and the Journal of the European Economic Association.
In addition to being Scientific Director of J-PAL North America, he serves on the review boards of J-PAL North America's Social Policy Research Initiative and LEVI Evaluation Hub, and has served on the review board of J-PAL NA's Worker Prosperity Initiative. He has also lectured at J-PAL training events.
