The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 1,000 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.
Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.
Our research, policy, and training work is fundamentally better when it is informed by a broad range of perspectives.
In this project, partnering with the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) and the Government of Tamil Nadu, the researchers will test whether advanced online coursework and tutoring can identify and support high achievers in mathematics in rural Tamil Nadu. The researchers will provide direct evidence of the distribution of high-potential students and the importance of various support systems for disadvantaged students with high academic promise. AoPS is interested in collaborating and will provide online material for free. The Government of Tamil Nadu has also expressed interest in this study, which fits with its strategy of supporting high-achieving students throughout the State. The researchers aim to provide a model that can be extended to other Indian states or other countries if it proves successful. The researchers plan to use the pilot to refine the implementation plan and get it ratified by the government.
