The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) is a global research center working to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. Anchored by a network of more than 1,000 researchers at universities around the world, J-PAL conducts randomized impact evaluations to answer critical questions in the fight against poverty.

Our affiliated professors are based at over 120 universities and conduct randomized evaluations around the world to design, evaluate, and improve programs and policies aimed at reducing poverty. They set their own research agendas, raise funds to support their evaluations, and work with J-PAL staff on research, policy outreach, and training.

Rema Hanna is the Jeffrey Cheah Professor of South-East Asia Studies and a Co-Director of the Evidence for Policy Design research program at the Center for International Development, Harvard University.
Rema is a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research, an Affiliate of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development, and a Faculty Affiliate at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies. She is particularly interested in understanding how to make government services “work” for the poor in developing countries. She has worked on large-scale field projects with governments and non-profits to understand how to improve safety net systems, reduce bureaucratic absenteeism, and reduce corruption.
Rema holds a PhD in Economics from MIT and a BS in Public Policy from Cornell University. Prior to joining the Kennedy School, she was a faculty member at New York University.
Rema serves as Scientific Director of J-PAL Southeast Asia and as Co-Chair of J-PAL's Social Protection sector. In addition, Rema serves on the Executive Committee of the J-PAL Board of Directors and the review boards of J-PAL's Inclusive Financial Innovation Initiative and Social Protection Initiative. She has also lectured at J-PAL training events.
