Launched in 2017, J-PAL and IPA’s Governance, Crime, and Conflict Initiative (GCCI) is celebrating six years of supporting the generation of cutting edge experimental research on topics central to good governance, crime prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery.

This day-long event will showcase emerging insights from the GCCI research portfolio, with panels exploring:
- Strategies to strengthen or supplement state capacity and reduce corruption in fragile and conflict-affected contexts;
- Tools for building or restoring social cohesion for populations recovering from conflict or experiencing displacement;
- Governance strategies for enforcing and incentivizing compliance with environmental regulations, as a tool to mitigate climate change;
- And more.

Bringing together academic researchers, policymakers, civil society organizations, and others, we will reflect on emerging insights for policy and programming from this research portfolio and build consensus on a forward-looking research agenda by discussing where critical evidence gaps remain. Participants will gain valuable insights into how research findings can inform evidence-based policy decisions to contribute to more effective governance and peacebuilding approaches.
A complementary J-PAL event will also take place in the same location the day before, on December 4. This event will feature groundbreaking multidisciplinary governance research and foster cross-disciplinary connections as part of a greater Governance Initiative-led effort to encourage economists to collaborate with researchers from other disciplines and leverage their methodologies, insights, and tools to strengthen their work. Learn about GCCI
The Governance, Crime, and Conflict Initiative (GCCI)—jointly run by J-PAL and IPA, with core support from UK International Development from the UK government —funds cutting-edge and policy-relevant research. Comprised of J-PAL’s Governance Initiative and Crime and Violence Initiative, and IPA’s Peace & Recovery Program, our research focuses on how to strengthen governance, reduce crime and violence, and address the causes of instability and insecurity in conflict settings.
GCCI arose out of the recognition that while the share of the global population living in extreme poverty has fallen substantially over the past four decades, progress remains uneven. Countries facing political instability, conflict, and violence have experienced increasing rates of poverty during this same period. Thus, GCCI emerged in 2017 to investigate potential solutions and increase rigorous evidence on these urgent topics. To date, GCCI has funded over 130 policy-relevant research projects across 30 countries reducing violence and fragility, promoting peace, and preventing, coping with, and recovering from crises.
