As part of the "Development Methodologies" Professorship held by Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, a summer school for African researchers and policymakers will be organised from 5 to 8 July 2022 in Abidjan, on the campus of the Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics (ENSEA).

Following the 2021 Summer School "Innovations for Development'', this new edition will be organised in partnership with the French Development Agency (AfD), the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), the Fund for Innovation in Development (FID) and the Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics of Abidjan (ENSEA).

Renowned researchers affiliated with the J-PAL network will contribute to the teaching programme, including Esther Duflo, Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, co-founder of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab and recipient of 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics.

Participants

The summer school will bring together two groups of participants:

  • Researchers with demonstrated interest and ability to incorporate impact evaluation methods into their research work;

  • Policymakers involved in the commission of evaluations or in the use of evaluation results to guide decision-making.

Format and schedule

The summer school will be articulated around two teaching tracks in order to meet the needs and interests of two groups of participants:

  • An academic track aimed at reinforcing the knowledge and good practices of participants who are already well versed in the methodological foundations of impact evaluations;

  • A policy track aimed at showing the role of impact assessment in the design of evidence-based public policies by illustrating the process from the production of evidence to the adoption of policies.

These two tracks will be supplemented by common sessions bringing together the two groups of participants in order to facilitate exchanges between researchers and policymakers around practical cases.

A detailed schedule can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
