J-PAL Southeast Asia Evaluating Social Programs, 2016, Jakarta

Program Objectives 

In cooperation with the University of Indonesia’s Faculty of Economics and Business, J-PAL Southeast Asia is organizing a three-day course that will introduce participants to randomized evaluations and how this method can be used to measure the effects of social programs and help shape better policies.

Program Focus

Through both lectures and group work, participants will be given a thorough understanding of randomized evaluation including:

• Why and when is a rigorous impact evaluation needed?
• Common pitfalls of evaluations, and how randomization can help
• Key components of a good randomized evaluation design
• Alternative techniques for incorporating randomization into project design
• Determining appropriate sample size, measure outcomes, and manage data
• Guarding against threats that may undermine the integrity of the results
• Techniques for analysis and interpretation of results
• Maximizing policy impact and test external validity

Target Audience

The course is custom-designed for participants with background in research, including lecturers, researchers, and also PhD students from the University of Indonesia.
