Prof. Philip Oreopoulos at the Department of Economics, University of Toronto, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Project Manager to help evaluate and implement an AI-powered Khan Academy tutoring initiative. This role involves overseeing the strategic development and implementation of research projects in Canada and the US.

The research project aims to document both qualitatively and quantitatively the potential of a generative artificial intelligence computer-assisted learning model to enhance students’ personalized learning experiences and mathematics achievement on a large scale.

The position will be part-time to full-time, depending on qualifications and availability. This role will be based in Toronto for a period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on project needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine the overall research project strategy to effectively meet project goals while maintaining high fidelity.
  • Guide and manage a team of research assistants to ensure comprehensive support, adherence to project timelines, and rigorous adherence to program protocols.
  • Train and recruit all high school and University of Toronto tutors to ensure they are carrying out their tasks. Follow-up and offer 1:1 check-ins for quality assurance.
  • Establish and maintain all calendar invites and email correspondences between tutor, tutee, and tutee parents to ensure all sessions are carried out professionally and in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain connections with teachers and educational institutions, offering requisite training and resources while fostering ongoing communication channels to address inquiries and concerns.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of all research materials, including surveys, ethics proposals, grant applications, questionnaires, and data collection instruments.
  • Monitor the project budget in consultation with Prof. Oreopoulos, track monthly timesheets, and ensure efficient allocation of resources.
  • Document all research procedures, methodologies, and results in a clear and organized manner.
  • Foster transparent and efficient communication with project stakeholders, including Prof. Oreopoulos, collaborating school districts, and external partners.

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (management, education policy, economics, etc.) required.
  • Demonstrated experience in research environments, running evaluations, and managing complex operations.
  • Experience in project management, including coordinating teams and overseeing project budgets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to respond to implementation challenges, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and software.
  • Authorization to work in Canada is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or other graduate-level training are highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with AI technologies and their application in education.
  • Experience in data analysis of large data sets, working with software like Stata and R, is preferred.
  • Record of accomplishment of adeptly navigating complex organizations and building relationships among diverse groups of stakeholders.
