To accelerate the impact brought about by evidence-based interventions, J-PAL South Asia has been working to identify novel pathways to scale.
J-PAL South Asia aims to utilize insights from J-PAL’s global base of evidence to identify interventions which (a) are supported by consistent, positive results across (preferably) multiple studies, (b) require considerably low-touch efforts by government/NGO partners to integrate within existing programs and (c) require comparably low-touch support from the J-PAL South Asia than on full- scale projects.
Based on consultations with researchers, ecosystem partners, and government stakeholders, J-PAL South Asia will diagnose the strength of these interventions against detailed criteria based on evidence-based interventions by considering evidence rigour, scalability potential, partner readiness and ASPIRE’s mission alignment.
After an analysis of existing evidence and field visits to understand grassroots implementation, operational insights will be distilled into knowledge products such as toolkits, or recommendations to improve an existing government scheme/policy. These outputs will then be disseminated to governments or other stakeholders for implementation with low-touch support from J-PAL SA.
The following interventions across 5 sectors have been considered for low-touch scaling:
Agriculture: Identifying effective training methods for farmers
Energy, Environment and Climate Change: Reducing CO2 and PM 2.5 emissions by brick kilns through improved management of zig-zag kilns
Social Protection: Addressing multidimensional poverty using Conditional Cash Transfers
Labour Markets: Improving job seekers’ employment and earnings through credible skills signals
Gender: Building non-cognitive skills to improve life outcomes among adolescents
